Cristiano Ronaldo sets a new international scoring record

In the 89th minute of Portugal’s World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland, the newly minted Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo set a new record. Goncalo Guedes swung in a cross from the right side, and Ronaldo rose to meet it and head in a world-record-tying equalizer.

In the sixth minute of stoppage time, he scored his 111th international goal, guiding his side to a 2-1 comeback victory.

“This record is mine and it is unique,” Ronaldo said after the match. “I’m extremely happy and it’s another one for my career. It’s about motivation and the desire I have to continue playing football, also from this last contract I made, in which I was happy to return home. If we get up every day with the ambition to motivate and do better, to make the fans and our children happy, that is essential.

“It’s another record for the museum.”

Euro 2020 two-goal effort by Cristiano Ronaldo

With a two-goal effort against France in a group-stage competition earlier this year at Euro 2020, Ronaldo pulled level with Daei’s 109. Both of those goals came from the penalty spot in the 2-2 tie in Budapest.

Christine Sinclair of Canada holds the lifetime international scoring record with 186 goals.

Ronaldo also created Euro history by scoring twice against Hungary in Portugal’s opening group-stage game to become the tournament’s all-time top scorer with 11 goals.

He became the first male to compete in five Euros, trailing only Carolina Morace of Italy, who has competed in six. Ronaldo is the first player in Euro history to score in all five tournaments.

Abby Wambach, Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, Birgit Prinz, Carli Lloyd, Julie Fleeting, and Sinclair are the top scorers on the list, with Ronaldo in eighth place.

The 36-year-old made his international debut in 2003, and his 180 caps tie him with Sergio Ramos of Paris Saint-Germain as the European player with the most appearances for his country.

Ronaldo had two significant achievements with Portugal, having won the Euro 2016 final and the first UEFA Nations League three years later.
