Finally, after years of wait Mahira Khan has finally graced the small screen with her come back after six years with the first episode Hum Kahan Ke Sachay Thay, written by Umera Ahmed. We all agree that Umera’s writing is powerful and engaging and all her dramas that have been a part of TV depict strong storylines and breathtaking climaxes. The drama is her 2008’s novel adaptation and the story revolves around many emotional bumps.

Hum Kahan Ke Sachay Thay episode 1 review

Directed by Farooq Rind, Hum Kahan Ke Sachay Thay opens up with three cousins Mehreen, Aswad, and Mashal in their early teens. Three of them are first cousins and share an unbreakable bond. Mashal, a young pretty girl from the elite household, whereas Mehreen who is also her ‘phuppo ki beti’ is a troubled child after her parents’ break up and her father’s death. Aswad (Usman Mukhtar), a cousin of both – who lives abroad – adores Mehreen and this makes Mashal and her mother Shugufta (Zainab Qayyum) jealous.

The complexities of relationships

The young cast transitions into adults and we see Mehreen (Mahira Khan) as a troubled woman who has anxiety along with other health issues and in the very next scene, we see Mashal (Kubra Khan) as a villain. According to the storyline, Mehreen is deprived of her rights as an adult who shares a household with Mashal and her family along with her Nani (Shamim Hilaly). For instance, Mehreen who is a bright child and pursuing her Ph.D. has to go to the university by bus whereas her own cousin goes to the same university, the same class in her lavish car, just because Mehreen’s father Mansoor (Omair Rana) was involved in drugs and embezzlement at his workplace and died – by a possible suicide – while she was young.

The brilliant young cast

The first episode mostly featured the younger cast to make relevance according to the story and without a doubt, the younger cast managed to depict the right emotion at the right time. Especially the star kid who played Mehreen was full of emotions. The strain started to happen between Mehreen and Mashal at a very young age that followed their adult lives as well.

Hum Kahan Kay Sachay Thay shows how the flaws of parents haunt their offspring in our society. Children belonging to dysfunctional families are always judged in the shadow of their parents. The first episode started with a rollercoaster of emotions and we are definitely looking forward to the next episodes as it promises much more.
