Russia Threatens to Block YouTube, Facebook and Twitter for Censoring State Media

Russia Threatens to Block YouTube, Facebook and Twitter for Censoring State Media

Before we jump into Russia, let’s talk about the tech giants and how the Tech Giants never miss a chance to stay in trouble and that too is major trouble. After Facebook making a device that will read your mind or a tech brawl between Apple and Facebook, or Facebook back to back lawsuits over security and privacy breaches. The Tech Giants should actually stay under the limelight so that the layman can talk about those over their social media accounts. Ironic!

Russia to Ban Facebook, Twitter, and Facebook

Well now under recent developments, the Russian lawmakers on Wednesday moved a step closer to allowing regulators to block Internet platforms like Facebook and YouTube if they are deemed to have censored content produced by Russians.

According to draft legislation submitted to parliament Thursday, the bill explains that the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Foreign Ministry would be able to identify foreign platforms they view as violating Russians’ rights by restricting content. That designation would allow Russia’s federal media watchdog Roskomnadzor to fully or partially block the platform in Russia.

The bill’s explanatory note singles out tech sites including YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter for having “censored” the accounts of Russian state-run news outlets including RT, RIA Novosti, and Crimea 24 since April. Facebook and Twitter began labeling state-affiliated media accounts this summer, months after Alphabet’s YouTube introduced similar labels.

“The urgency in adopting the draft law,” says a Reuters translation of the explanatory note, “is due to numerous cases of unjustified restriction of Russian citizens’ access to information in the Russian media.”

The legislation now needs to get approval from the House Federation Board before President Vladimir Putin signs it to law, steps that are considered formalities.

Has the Russian Bill already passed?

The legislation has already been passed by the lower house of the parliament (State Duma). A statement from the country’s parliament says the relevant authorities would not pardon any company if they limit information based on language/nationality. For those who are unaware, the Russian parliament is termed the Federal Assembly. It has two main houses- Upper (Federation Council), Lower (State Duma). For legislation to turn into a law, it needs to get the approval of these two houses and the consent of the President. Out of this, the above-mentioned legislation will be up for approval at the Federation Council now.

The Kremlin in recent years has increased its efforts to control the Russian segment of the Internet under the pretext of fighting online extremism. In 2018 regulators ordered the encrypted Messenger Service “Telegraph” which will be blocked, although the effort ended earlier this year after the Co-Founder Pavel Durov reported on steps to fight extremism.

A Moscow court had also fined Google last week because it did not record online content which was prohibited by Russian authorities, the latest in a series of increased penalties. In February a Moscow court was fined Twitter and Facebook for ignoring Russian laws which required them to store data from Russian people in the country.

Moscow against the US cybersecurity policies

Last year, Russia had also passed a “sovereign internet” law tightening state control of web traffic in response to what Moscow called an aggressive U.S. cybersecurity strategy. Free speech activists criticized the law, saying it could allow the authorities to restrict access to information at will.

Russia has been stepping up its efforts to control the Russian content on the internet, supposedly under the impression to “Combat Online Extremism” in recent years. But, if the legislature approves the ban imposition. The people of Russia have to live without some main social media apps!

Tech Tuesday Startup Of The Week: Eye Interactions

Before startups like Eye Interactions. We should talk about entrepreneurship in Pakistan, we should know that Pakistani is on 25th number under the largest purchasing power. And under the GDP it falls on 38th number from around the globe. But if we talk about today, Pakistan’s economy with startups has become better than in the last two decades. Entrepreneurship with different startups is also one best ways to improve the economy. There are two types of entrepreneurship. One in which there is a low investment and the other one is in which there is a high investment. Many businesses in Pakistan include these two types of Entrepreneurship. Whether it is low or high (Investment) depending upon the product and startup of an organization or industry. For a low investment, you can start your business with simply a space for teaching or any academy center. Or you can also invest in small businesses, online selling, a little shop, handmade goods, books, or something else.

These investments can be done for the abled-people, but one hardly thinks about the people who are disabled or differently-abled, let alone start something for themselves as a startup.

According to WHO, 30 million people are living with different kind of disabilities and out of these people 20 percent of them cannot move their limbs or perform any day activity. But, Pakistan is also blessed to have successful startups for helping disabled or differently-abled people with vision problems, empowering individuals to do things by their own and making their lives easier and one of the very successful startups is, Eye Interactions!

About Eye Interactions

Eye Interactions is a brain-child of Irfan Ahmed, Adeel Ahmed and Hamza Irfan, their vision was to create something that can help people with eye disability through A.I.

Eye Interactions planned to devise an algorithm that will allow an individual to carry out basic tasks through eye movement. It is developing gaze wheelchairs and home automation kits in order to help and empower disable people. Their intention was to make this device interact through eye movement and help run electrical appliances and electric wheelchair with it. The team used Python to program the device for detecting eye movements. Previously, the same team also designed a prototype car for Rs. 3,000 to test it out as a part of their final year project.

Prototypes of Eye Interactions

Eye Interactions have successfully created two prototypes, the Eye Controlled Robotic Car and the other one is Home Automation Using Eye movements.

The Eye Controlled Robotic Wheelchairs

The Eye Controlled Robotic Wheelchair can help a disabled person move and do normal day to day activity. A gaze-wheelchair that is controlled by the eye movement. What makes this unique is this eye controlled robotic car comes with a set of glasses that has a AI camera mount in it, and that will help a disabled person to move and also let him control his devices and appliances in his home. The device’s automation system uses a blink sensor to detect blinking in real-time. It can also be used for home automation, for moving a cursor on your computer or moving a wheelchair. New devices can be added by programming the system accordingly.

Home Automation

The Home Automation comes with a screen board; you can place that board anywhere in your house with 6 other connections with a technology naming Note MCU, where you can be connected with WIFI and offline Cloud and control different features through your eye movement.

Eye Interactions App

This is the first time in Pakistan that Eye Interactions application is working for three main categories based on Voice, Button-Click or Eye Movement to control your appliances. If anyone with eye disability is facing difficulty in controlling of electrical appliances of their homes physically? Eye Interactions can start off with a very comforting change in their life-style. The application is making it easier. It is affordable and extremely easy to use. You can turn on and off any electrical appliances with a tap on your phone.

Milestones Of Eye Interactions

The startup currently is receiving massive recognition from around the world; Eye Interactions has also been selected in top100 startups in “StartupIstanbul.” And also received seed funding by Unicef in Generation Unlimited’s Youth Challenge 2.0.

The aim is to ensure that differently-abled people won’t live in difficulties and dependency on others and they can take part in normal life and can perform their day to day tasks with ease!

Startup like these from young people not only ensure the goal functioning of this society, but also gives courage to other people to come forward with a vision to provide ease for the group of individuals who are striving hard with their disabilities and still want to make a change in the society.

Book Review: Zero To One By Peter Thiel With Blake Masters

Book Review: Zero To One By Peter Thiel With Blake Masters

How to Build The Future? An important and attractive line for most of us, enough to be reading on any bookshelf and stop for a second and wonder… what future do we want to build up? Similarly, we picked out the international bestseller “Zero to One,” which will guide you on ‘Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future,’ and also was a recommended read for start-ups, entrepreneurs, and innovators, by Peter Thiel.

About the Author

Peter Andreas Thiel is a German-American billionaire entrepreneur and venture capitalist. A co-founder of PayPal, Palantir Technologies, and Founders Fund, he was the first outside investor in Facebook. He studied philosophy at Stanford University, graduating with a B.A. in 1989. He then earned his J.D. from Stanford Law School in 1992. He co-founded PayPal in 1999, serving as a chief executive officer until its sale to eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion. Peter was ranked No. 4 on the Forbes Midas List of 2014, with a net worth of around $2.2 billion, and No. 391 on the Forbes 400 in 2020, with a net worth of $2.1 billion. Thiel became Facebook’s first outside investor when he acquired a 10.2% stake for $500,000 in August 2004. He sold the majority of his shares in Facebook for over $1 billion in 2012 but remains on the board of directors.

Peter Thiel held regular lectures at Stanford University in 2012. In cooperation with a student of this class, Blake Masters, Thiel took those class notes and published them as the book “Zero to One”.

Main Context

“What important truth do very few people agree with you on?”  The two-hundred-pager starts off with an interesting question like someone would ask in an interview, these are the types of questions that are easier to ask to yourselves in daily life. The question however correlates with business and often works well in it. The book title also suggests a progression of your business or any start-up from Zero to One! The book is broken down into 14 chapters, each delivering an important single message.

Monopoly For Business

Reaching the state of monopoly is the highest goal for every company. However, this comes off as very challenging if you are kick-starting your business/start-up in competitive markets. And if there are already some products similar to yours with a satisfying sale around the consumers, the challenge would double up, and the chances of becoming a monopoly are low. Therefore, horizontal progress is not a solution. The only way is to make progress is 0 to 1. And through that way, the product gets 10x better than the closest competitors. Or otherwise, your product might get rejected and others would be preferred.

Living Under a Power Law

Peter mentions in the put about the famous saying that ‘Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.’ The idea revolves around this that how compound interest is vital and also an example from Finance. However, power law seems to be a wider concept that people and the system better care of. He explains how through a different educational progression of a student, he or she would not stick to just course work. Extracurricular activities are important as well and that students should not focus on one major career and major without working on their craft, or else that would become unintuitive. To have a successful perspective for their thing smart investors will decide to chase only one thing and invest hard on as few products as possible to follow the sense of power law.

Is Every Valuable Company a Secret at First?

Every great company was once unknown. Nobody suspected them to grow. Secrets are the underlying weapon behind them. The Author determines two types of secrets: the secrets about nature, and about people. There are characteristics of secrets about people. Sometimes people don’t know secrets about their own selves and sometimes they hide them deliberately. While starting out a company or introducing a product in the market, you should always navigate yourself with questions like what kind of secrets is nature not telling you. And the best place where you can find those secrets is where no one is looking at.

Setting a Foundation for a Company

The opportunity of setting a premise is a chance which in usual cases is given only once. Taking the initial decisions when starting out creates a concrete foundation for the whole product or even a company. One of the most important elements is who is joining on board and who is co-founding. Every start-up has flaws and fluctuations, but trust is the key! Everyone in the founding team has to be full-time, with undivided devotion. The people who work in the beginning have to be clearly distinguished in terms of their responsibilities and feel they are given the opportunity to do the irreplaceable job.

The book is easy to digest, without overwhelming terminologies and business concepts, along with a super-easy approach to plan a start-up with entrepreneurial wisdom. From macro to micro, the book covers up strong topics with real-world examples, as “Great business is defined by its ability to generate cash flows in the future.

Book Review: Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely

Book Review: Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely

The bookPredictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Future explains the hidden forces that drive how we make our decisions, which are far from rationality than what we think but can help us stay on top of our finances, interact better with others and live happier lives, once we know about them. We are listing down some of the most important highlights of the book.

About The Author Dan Ariely

Dan Ariely is an Israeli-American professor and author. He serves as a James B. Duke Professor of psychology and behavioral economics at Duke University. Dan is the founder of the research institution The Center for Advanced Hindsight. He is also the co-founder of companies including Kayma, BEworks, Timeful, and Genie. Ariely is famous for his TEDtalks and his talks have been viewed over 15 million times. The author has appeared in numerous documentary films naming The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley and produced and participated in (Dis)Honesty: The Truth About Lies. He has written over seven books, including Three New York best sellers Upside of Irrationality, The Honest Truth About Dishonesty, and Unpredictable irrationality. Dan’s a professor of psychology and behavioral economics, how we make choices, especially about money, are his forte and prior area of interest. Ariely was named one of the 50 most influential living psychologists in the world in 2018.

The Main Idea of Predictable Irrationality

The main crux of the book revolves around the idea is that consumers are systematically irrational in their behavior at best making sub-optimal choices, and at worst engaging in self-punishing behaviors. It also includes how we as consumers tend to focus on what we may lose, rather than what we may gain. And with everything we attempt to do, we should train ourselves to question the repeated behaviors. One of the main elements includes how we assume other people will see monetary transactions from the same perspective as we do. Or giving up on our long-term goals, with procrastination.

The Truth about Comparison

An important thing that is highlighted is how we’re wired to compare things, and our brains do so in the easiest way possible. We often compare what’s right in front of us, not necessarily what we should think about or look at that might not be around at the time. We are only able to make judgments by comparing the prices and offers of one thing with that of others. So if you give people options to compare your products to, which are slightly worse, they’ll pick yours more often. We rarely choose things in absolute terms. Instead, we focus on the relative advantage of one thing over another and estimate value accordingly.

The Cost of Zero

Zero or free is a source of irrational excitement; it’s called the “zero price effect.”  Consumers will pay more just to be able to get a free gift or bonus, such as free shipping.   And they’ll wait in line for long durations or go to extraordinarily long lengths to get something for free. For example, as Amazon rolled out free (Super Saver) shipping across markets, sales increased accordingly. “Free is the most valuable word in marketing.”

The Cost of Social Norms vs Market Norms

The book also discussed why we are happy to do things, but not when we are paid to do them. Dan discusses how “Consumer behavior” is patterned with two sets of norms, one is social norms which are implicit rules of social interaction, and market norms which are hard transactional business rules.

These are two different forms of behaviors. For example, encourage consumers to spread the word to help their friends, but we don’t pay them to do it. Using social norms where possible, rather than create new market norms with financial rewards or fines.

The High Price of Ownership

An important aspect of why we overvalue what we own. Consumers are irrational insofar they overvalue things once they own them.  This is because we suffer from “loss aversion.”’ We don’t like losing things.  Master the art of tackling the “Endowment Effect” by getting your product into the hands of influencers, once they will own your product, they’ll advocate it.

The Expectations’ Effect

Moreover, it was discussed at length that why our mind gets what it expects. Expectations from before and the irrational aspects of them could easily cloud the point of view. Tell a consumer they’ll like something and they will.  Tell them they won’t like something or use negative associations, and they won’t. People will form their opinion as you guide their minds towards it, both negatively and positively!

This book contains plenty of lessons in every chapter. Dan asserts that attacking the rational choice theory that supports most marketing models, he also uses behavioral economics, a fusion of economics and psychology to explain how consumers behave, rather than how they should.  With this book, he has also taken a healthy spin at partiality in ideas and one’s thinking patterns.

You can get Predictably Irrational on Amazon with Kindle for $6.99 on their free application, with the paperback for $11.99. You can listen to their audiobook for free with their audible trial offer.

Cosmic Phenomenon: Jupiter And Saturn To Align Tonight After 800 Years!

Cosmic Phenomenon: Jupiter And Saturn To Align Tonight After 800 Years!

Gear up; Winter is here and the longest night has arrived with the biggest cosmic surprise, which is going to happen tonight, and that too after almost 800 years!

Two of the biggest planets of the solar system – Jupiter and Saturn will form ‘The Great Conjuction’ in the sky tonight. December 21, also marks the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the longest night of 2020.

What is The Great Conjunction?

“The Great Conjunction” signifies the rarity of the union because unlike conjunctions with the other bright planets, these two do not get close as often due to the distance they have. Jupiter and Saturn of all planets can be viewed through naked eye and during this show, both the planets will appear very close to one another as they were overlapping to create a double planet illusion. The last time it happened in the middle ages almost 800 year ago, making this night even more special.

The conjunction of the two planets occurs every 19.6 years, but this would be the first time since 1226 that the pair aligns at night and Earthlings will be able to witness it. The distance between the planets will remain same but the angle of viewing it from Earth will be aligned. From the Earth, the two planets will be viewed only 0.1 degrees apart!

How can I see Saturn and Jupiter in the night sky?

In Karachi you can witness it in the night sky according to the clarity the sky possesses. According to the website “timeanddate,” the planets visibility chart shows Jupiter and Saturn with ‘Fairly good visibility and average visibility’ respectively.

Tonight’s sky chart shows the sight of Jupiter and Saturn in Karachi will begin around 8:03pm and will be blinking together with the stars all-night long!

READ: IN SPACE: SEVEN NEW COSMIC STARS DISCOVERED!

Saturn will appear to be a smaller fainter blob at Jupiter’s upper right. Binoculars will be needed to separate the two planets. Despite appearing super close tonight, both the gas giants will actually be more than 450 million miles (730 million km) apart. Earth, meanwhile, will be 550 million miles (890 million km) from Jupiter. A telescope will not only be able to capture Jupiter and Saturn in the same field of view, but even some of their brightest moons, including Callisto, Io and Europa!

So are you ready to witness the cosmic phenomenon? The next super-close pairing will be expected in March 15, 2080. If not tonight, then you would be waiting for a LONG time!

Facebook Working On Device To Read Your Brain

After the Antitrust Lawsuit of the Facebook, and the on-going feud between Facebook and Apple. Something else is coming up and this time it’s not only going to blow your mind, but it will probably read it before too!

In a leaked company meeting on Tuesday, the chief Technology Officer of Facebook Mike Schroepfer highlighted recent progress on the company’s neural interface tech, reported by BuzzFeed.

Apparently the ultimate goal is not to harvest our thoughts as yet another form of personal data, but rather to give people the ability to control software with their thoughts.

Facebook vs Apple Controversy

Recently, the social media giant is already in between a feud with Apple over the privacy policies. Facebook issued a full page ad on local newspapers claiming that they are in full support of “Small Businesses,” and Apple’s privacy policies is somewhat giving the opposite narrative to this whole change. Apple on the other side defensively issued a statement yesterday that they will not compromise on their users’ safety and they will be given the choice to either turn the option to let the application track them.

Will people actually buy the device that will read minds?

Well with this new “Mind Reading” part of Facebook, Schroepfer acknowledged that getting people to actually use the tech might be a hard sell.

“We have to build responsibly to earn trust and the right to continue to grow,” Schroepfer said. “It’s imperative that we get this right so that people around the world get all these amazing technologies… without experiencing the downsides,” he added.

Facebook has been working towards this brain-reading system for years. The company announced its plans to develop a brain-computer interface headset in 2017, and later in September 2019 it purchased the neural interface startup CTRL-Labs.

Last year according to Facebook’s they seek to a long-term goal to reach a much, much wider audience: The aim explains to give all of us the ability to control digital devices — from keyboards to augmented reality glasses — using the power of thought alone. To do that, the company will need access to our brain data.

Based on the leaked meeting, it sounds like the social media giant has made some progress toward its goal so, if Facebook’s narrative is believable. The sci-fi dream of sending commands to a PC is on its way to become a living reality.

Sony Is Pulling Cyberpunk 2077 From The PlayStation Store!

Sony Is Pulling Cyberpunk 2077 From The PlayStation Store!

The most anticipated game Cyberpunk 2077 came, and went to quickly… The game was anticipated for a long time by tech geeks and gamers, the trailers created quite a buzz and the game Cyberpunk itself was way ahead into the future with a peak into Sci-fi. But, now it’s not!

The company has announced on Thursday that Sony is pulling Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store and offering full refunds for anyone who bought the game from the digital storefront.

Can I still play Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4?

Unfortunately the owners of PS4, cannot play Cyberpunk 2077 on their consoles. Sony stated said if someone has already ordered for it or bought it, can ask for a refund for the money they spent on it. Sony further said that to consumers can visit the site and sign into your PlayStation account to submit a request, specifically for PS4.

However, later on Thursday evening, Sony said it is “aware some users are experiencing issues” accessing the refund form. If you’re seeing issues, you may want to try again later.

Why is Cyberpunk 2077 removed?

After the release, the geek cult gamers had reported a few bugs and issues with Cyberpunk 2077, particularly on the older, base PS4 console. Previously this week, CD Projekt Red offered refunds for anyone who bought the game on their consoles, but directed people to retailers or digital stores where the game was purchased.

Stars of Cyberpunk 2077

This time the game also features actor Keanu Reeves as a starring character in the game, as “Johnny Silverhand.” The original score was led by Marcin Przybyłowicz, featuring the contributions of several licensed artists including Michael-Leon Wooley as “V,” Michael Gregory as “Victor Vector” Jacek Rozenek as Geralt of Rivia.

CD Projekt Red issued a statement on social media which said, “First of all, we would like to start by apologizing to you for not showing the game on base last-gen consoles before it premiered and, in consequence, not allowing you to make a more informed decision about your purchase, we should have paid more attention to making it play better on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. If you are not pleased with the game on your console and don’t want to wait for updates, you can opt to refund your copy.”

Currently CD Projekt Red is working on a series of “large patches” for the game. The first is expected to be released in January 2021; the second will be released in February. CD Projekt Red didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment, but now after their statement they reassured the consumers that these patches will address the most prominent issues and bugs with the game
