Book Review: Good Habits Bad Habits by Wendy Wood

Our behaviours become our habits humans tend to feel that their habits are like rocks and they can’t be fixed. But Good Habits Bad Habits by Wendy Wood features how The Science of Making Positive Changes can fix your habits for the longer run.

About the Author

Wendy Wood is a psychologist from the UK. She currently teaches psychology and business at the University of Southern California since 2009. Her primary research contributions are in Habits and behavior changes in humans in reference to the psychology of gender. She is the author of Good Habits, Bad Habits, released in October 2019. New Yorker also reviewed the book.

The Book in Review – Good Habits Bad Habits by Wendy Wood

Her book reveals that Habits are reactions that are naturally initiated by the signals that went with the reactions in the past. Because habits are prompted by the setting wherein they shaped, they can be very inflexible. As Wood has shown, habits can be started autonomously of aims and can happen with insignificant control Wood’s work develops the focal arrangement that habits create when individuals more than once give a reaction with regards to conduct.

Wendy Woody

The structure of Habit

When Habits structure, seeing that setting naturally brings to mind the routine reaction. Specific research incorporates how and why individuals fall once more into old habits, how great examples help individuals meet objectives, how to change undesirable habits, and how habits advance generalizations in social settings. Many of the activities of regular day to day routine are habitual and hence can be hard to change.

Habit as a learning tool

Habits are a learning instrument. We should simply rehash something and get reward while making a habit. Around 43% of what individuals do each day is rehashed in a similar setting, typically while they are contemplating something different. They’re automatically reacting without truly deciding. Furthermore, that is the thing that a habit is. A habit is such a psychological alternate route to repeat what we did in the past that worked for us and got us some prize.

Wendy Woody

Habits, emotions and time

Time allotment adds to habits’ strength, so the more you’ve accomplished something; the more grounded your habits become. People who have solid habits, if the setting at the new place is like their old one, they will likely to keep that particular habit sustained. Somehow it relates to how well they are emotionally connected to the habit.

Wendy Woody Good Habits Bad Habits

In conclusion

We all are dependent on our habits and mostly the forms that feel easy to use and rewarding. Repeating them again and again if it is a good habit is rewarding, but the situation can turn awful if it is otherwise. The best evidence we have at this point is that it can take two to three months to form a simple habit to make something so automated that you don’t have to think about it.

SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket debris creates a beautiful light show around Oregon

Stargazers and moon gazers around Oregon and Washington DC witnessed an unexpected show. What looked like a meteor shower racing lazily across the night sky were actually the remains of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, burning up as it traveled through the atmosphere a few weeks ago.

SpaceX Falcon 9 debris

Twitter fills up with people posting videos on a thread when an Astronomer at the Center of Astrophysics Jonathan McDowell tweeted, “The Falcon 9 second stage from the Mar 4 Starlink launch failed to make a deorbit burn and is now reentering after 22 days in orbit. Its reentry was observed from the Seattle area at about 0400 UTC Mar 26.”

However, SpaceX has not claimed any responsibility for this magical shower, plenty of meteorologists and astronomers states that these lights in the sky are harmless rocket debris.

Many people who were unaware of what they were seeing, calling it a group of UFOs trying to take over the planet Earth, to which Jonathan tweeted,

Originally, the intention was to deorbit south of Australia in the Southern Ocean. But failed and reentered in the atmosphere. The only failure it had was that it couldn’t complete its deorbit burn so it didn’t come down as expected. Scientists waited for the last three weeks and they witnessed it in the sky.

SpaceX Falcon 9

The SpaceX Falcon 9 is a partially reusable two-stage rocket. The first stage which carries nine of SpaceX’s Merlin engines, does the initial heavy lifting, getting the rocket off the ground, while the second stage, with just a single Merlin engine, guides it into a parking orbit.

The first stage lands back to the Earth. That’s the stage where you can also see the rockets landing safely back in Earth. The second stage is usually left to decay in orbit or directed to burn up in the atmosphere.

The National Weather Service Seattle also called these bright lights as debris from a second-stage Falcon 9. It is also noted that this debris entry was much slower that the meteor shower, greater than 45,000mph.

Even though it was a result of a failure, but what a gorgeous and beautiful thing to have witnessed in the night sky!

Book Review: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Book Review: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel by Harper Lee. It was distributed in 1960 and was right away a big success. The novel has gotten an example of present-day American writing, winning the Pulitzer Prize. The plot and characters are inexactly founded on Lee’s perceptions of her family and her neighbors. An occasion that happened close to her old neighborhood of Monroeville, Alabama, in 1936, when she was ten.

Harper Lee – Author

Harper Lee was an American writer most popular for her 1960 novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Lee distributed just two books in her whole composing profession, yet she was granted the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2007 for her commitment to writing. Plot – To Kill a Mockingbird

The plot and characters of To Kill a Mockingbird are on Lee’s perceptions of her family and neighbors. Just as an occasion that happened close to her old neighborhood in 1936 when she was 10. The story deals with the madness of grown-up mentalities towards race and class in the Deep South of the 1930s. The story is portrayed through the eyes of two youngsters. It was motivated by racist perspectives in her old neighborhood of Monroeville, Alabama. Additionally, she composed the novel Go Set a Watchman during the 1950s. She distributed it in July 2015 as a continuation of Mockingbird. It was subsequently affirmed to be her first draft of Mockingbird.

To Kill a Mocking bird is an interesting book about justice and judging. It is set in a small community in America. A young lady named Scout is playing in her front garden with her sibling, Jem, when she meets a young man called Dill, who they get to know. Dill is a little gaunt kid, and just briefly remains in Scout’s town with his aunt. The children play a progression of games which includes another neighbor who was blamed for cutting his dad with a couple of scissors. The children are unfathomably frightened by the actual thought of this man, similar to the remainder of the road, the exemption being Scout and Jem’s dad, Atticus, so they dare each other to go closer to the house.

Wrong judgement

While this is going on the young kids’ dad is fighting a legal dispute, in which a black man was blamed for assaulting a white young girl. The story proceeds with wrong judgment the youngsters discover a tree and inside find different things. One of them being two wooden kids similar to themselves and a little pocket watch.

Following, the black man is prosecuted (Atticus, the youngsters’ dad is defending him) and practically the whole town accumulates in the court working to watch the trial. The black man goes up to talk thus does the white girl, and it is discovered that the black man couldn’t have done what the young girl had blamed him for doing.

Justice being visually impaired

Notwithstanding, justice is overlooked visually. The black man got thrown to jail and was subsequently executed by a gatekeeper for attempting to getaway. Scout needs to do a play for her school and needs to wear an outfit that resembles a ham. So she resembles a ham and later saves Jem from being slaughtered.

In conclusion

In spite of dealing with the significant issues of assault, rape, and racial imbalance, the novel is eminent for its glow and humor. Atticus Finch, the storyteller’s dad, has served as an ethical legend for some readers and as a model of uprightness for legal counselors.

He shows the significance of carrying on in a civilized way, in any event, when exposed to affronts. Furthermore, Atticus shows the kids the significance of listening to one’s soul in any event. When every other person holds an opposite view, the one thing that doesn’t maintain the majority share rule is an individual’s heart and his conscience.

Historian Joseph Crespino says that in the 20th century, To Kill a Mockingbird is presumably the most widely read book that deals with race in America. The novel’s principal character, Atticus Finch is the most suffering anecdotal picture of racial valor.

Book Review – The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey

Stephen Covey’s book is based on self-improvement. He believed that the way we see the world is based on our ideas and our own sets of perceptions. To change it we should change ourselves. And to make this happen we should change ourselves from the inside and make a reflection on our perception for a better change.

As Stephen Covey was also a notable keynote speaker so this book can also be used as a guideline for one’s personal life to make better management for themselves and not only this but to lead others on the same path too. It is a great tool for both your personal and professional traits.

Private Victory For Stephen Covey

He starts the book by combining three habits under Private Victory. This is about developing your habits as a person. If you want to make a change for society or a team you must start this practice on yourself. These habits will further strengthen the rest of your habits in 4th, 5th, and 6th which will ultimately help you boost your leadership skills along with your management skills.

Habit 1 – Be Proactive

Habits can be hard to maintain and Being Proactive is one of them. Things can come your way and that might make you less responsible if you don’t get the results you desire. Being proactive will encourage you to make the most changes in your life.

It doesn’t mean that you should put all your energy and effort into one single thing. It means you should focus on events that you can control easily without worrying.

If you develop this habit where you can control everything in your surroundings accordingly, you will be able to master it. And this will become the support pillar for the rest of your habits.

Habit 2 – Begin with the End in your Mind

Stephen starts this point as to begin something with a result in your mind. That means to develop self-leadership for success. Moreover, keeping a particular goal in mind and believing in the result will ensure you that you are not going off track.

Habit 3 – Put First Things First

THE SEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE BY STEPHEN COVEY

Habit 4 – Think Win-Win

This means that if one person is successful others do not need to achieve that at their expense. During the outcomes based on win-win situations, we should not risk our own rules.

Habit 5 – Seek First to Understand, and then to be Understood

Covey says that communication is the key. He explains that we should communicate with others first. To maintain a positive relationship, empathy is important. If you listen to others, you open a window into their souls.

Habit 6 – The Idea to Synergize with Stephen Covey

This means to take out the results from all those habits above and exercise them. Furthermore to acknowledge the contribution that other people make to a relationship or in a project.

STEPHEN COVEY

Habit 7 – Sharpen the Saw

This means that we need to create a positive balance. The balance of physical, spiritual, mental, and social dimensions of our lives. This practice will eventually increase our productivity for a great renewal of life.

To Conclude

Stephen Covey summarized the 7 habits in a very logical manner, which made perfect sense. This book contains all the logic to maintain and balance your life’s flow with different mastering techniques. With a little practice and slight changes in your normal day-to-day tasks, you can also incorporate some of these habits until you reach your success 7!

BookReview: The Second Mountain: The Quest for a Moral Life by David Brooks

In your whole life, you might have met many people who radiate a sense of fulfillment and joy. They depict good energy and all the good vibes and they seem full. Certain people bring out certain kinds of happiness. Have you wondered why this happens? Their secret of happiness and how they become the way they are?

The Author – David Brooks

David Brooks is a political and cultural commentator who writes for The New York Times. He has worked as a film critic for The Washington Times, a reporter and later op-ed editor for The Wall Street Journal, a senior editor at The Weekly Standard from its inception, a contributing editor at Newsweek, and The Atlantic Monthly, and a commentator on NPR and the PBS NewsHour. David wrote his first book in 2000 Bobos in Paradise: The Upper Class and How They Got There which was a bestseller, followed by his second book in 2004 On Paradise Drive: How We Live  Now(And Always Have) in the Future Tense, then Social Animal in 2011, The Road to Character in 2015 and The Second Mountain: The Quest for a Moral life in 2019.

The Second Mountain by David Brooks – in review

Why should we read it?

It’s found out that going through different walks of life each person has gone through different mountains, each different from one another finding one true goal, happiness!

David Brooks walking through a similar path of happiness believes otherwise, going through a rough patch of his divorce, he was on the quest and finally, he found the answer to his question. He explains many details in his book.  It gives the explanation why is it a satisfaction to help humanity and to fill the lack of happiness that we can see in almost everyone’s lives these days.

The main key ideas

The book is divided into five parts and the mountains are the individuality of the key ideas

The first mountain is the war for individual freedom and bravery how with power and individualism you can be anything, but the result eventually becomes the difference between either good or bad! Society is plagued by widespread selfishness, which is making us all lonely and ultimately unhappy.

The second mountain being freedom becoming irrelevant. Instead of living a purpose-driven life, here we are depressive and detached from every emotion. In other words, most of us are neither brave nor brave enough to write our own stories down. Our minds always wander from the meaty big questions. Nobody told anyone that [as the author says] ‘freedom actually sucks.’

How these thoughts are summed up, according to Brooks? He believes that serving the people around us is the greatest focus we can have in life and brings not only happiness but joy as well.

Is there something for me?

Now, before you start frustrating at how difficult it can be to lose yourself in the care of others, it’s not all so terrible. It is wise to begin your ascent up the second mountain by asking yourself, “What’s in it for me?” You don’t have to give up your goals entirely to help other people. It’s not about avoiding happiness as much as not making it your sole focus. It is like experiencing it for others more than yourself. Moreover, Joy is a more constant and profound sense of emotional well-being.

Love yourself as a habit

Another point that focuses that loving those you seek to help is not enough to keep you going when it gets hard to continue; you must be committed to working hard. Decide on your personal agreements, protocols, or rituals that you will execute when it gets tough to endure on that path. If you make pattern habits it will help you in your tough times!

David Brooks says, “The universe is alive and connected, these moments tell us. There are dimensions of existence you never could have imagined before. Quantum particles inexplicably flip together, even though they are separated by vast differences of time and space. Somehow the world is alive and communicating with itself. There is some interconnecting animating force, and we are awash in that force, which we with our paltry vocabulary call love.”

Brooks’s handling of words is giving, it becomes profound. He takes significant risks in finding a better way of understanding his existence. To make sacrifices even before begin to prepare yourself for one is profound! This makes this whole book a special one as this feels like a travelogue of interior life. On one simple notion, happiness for others!

Joe Biden launches investigation for missing PS5 and Xbox series X stock

A new twist in the story of no-stock of PS5 and Xbox Series X stock shortages is getting a new pace: President Joe Biden! The recently-elected President of the United States of America is expected to sign an executive order launching an investigation into solving the root issues of the missing stock.

Since the PS5 and Xbox Series X originally went up for pre-request last September, they’ve been difficult to purchase, particularly the previous. Also, this has been, incomplete, due to component shortage from the backend. At the present time, there’s a serious semiconductor shortage. Not exclusively are numerous big organizations contending over the parts, yet the COVID-19 pandemic has eased back the production phase. Also, obviously, this lack is affecting something beyond gaming, and now it’s grabbed the attention of the white house.

According to the Wall Street Journal, it states that “The executive order calls for a 100-day review of supply chains for four areas.” Those include the “semiconductors, used in products from cars to phones,” and of course, the hard-to-find PS5 and Xbox Series X.

The PS5 Stock Completely Sold Out!

Similarly, in November 2020, around Christmas, the gamers received a piece of bad news, that the stock has been completely wiped off from the stores, inventories, and warehouses. CEO Sony Jim Ryan said, “Everything is sold. Absolutely everything is sold. I’ve spent much of the last year trying to be sure that we can generate enough demand for the product. And now… I’m spending a lot more time on trying to increase supply to meet that demand.” Due to pandemic, pre-production phase had a rough patch that caused the process delayed. “We had to do all the manufacturing preparation by camera remotely,” he said. “I mean, just imagine that for a precision device like the PlayStation 5.”

The Cat Food Instead of PS5 From Amazon Drama

And that’s not all, Amazon also apologized to the customers as they received cat foods and foot massagers instead of their PS5 consoles, almost 100s of people lodged complaints and due to the shortage of the consoles, even Amazon couldn’t deliver them. They said they are “Really sorry” for what happened and will compensate by returning their payments back.

Joe Biden’s Investigation For Missing PS5 And Xbox Series X Stock

The investigation is not just looking into the computer chips. National security is also included on the table this time, as the Journal reminds us that ‘neodymium,’ one of the resources in short supply, “is needed for the solid-state lasers used to designate missile targets.”

Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Chris Coons (D-DW) praised the investigation, but are pushing President Biden to push our own companies harder if necessary. Their letter asks that the president “incentivize or, if necessary, require American companies to retain their domestic capacities during this time. Products and services that fuel our economy, contribute to American innovation and enhance our national security. Given the central role of semiconductors, strengthening the U.S. position in semiconductor research, design, and manufacturing is a national priority.”

Hopefully, this will mean that the PS5 and Xbox Series X stock shortages issue is going to end in the near future. Sony’s CEO Jim Ryan also addressed the issue in an interview, promising “relentless” action to “increase production.”

Bazaar is a brainchild of Saad Jangda and Hamza Jawaid, It is a mobile-based e-commerce marketplace that enables people running local grocery stores (Kiryana stores) to purchase the inventory for their stores from manufacturers, wholesalers, and suppliers.

Bazaar Technologies

When the two co-founders had started building Bazaar, they had set a target of serving 800 retailers in Karachi by the end of 2020 but they closed the year with over 10,000 retailers, beating their initial targets both in terms of the number of users served through the platform and GMV by over 10x. They also have an app that features over 500 SKUs of branded and unbranded products, offering free next-day delivery.

For Retailers

Bazaar offers a convenient ordering and reliable, fast delivery with market competitive prices.

For Suppliers

Bazaar offers features for suppliers as well, and that includes the direct route to market, cost-efficient distribution, and actionable market insights.

Achievement

Received Seed Funding From Alter Global

B2B e-commerce marketplace Bazaar has raised an unprecedented $1.3 million in a pre-seed round from the US and Pakistan-based institutional and angel investors.

The investment round for the seed funding was led by Pakistan-focused fund Indus Valley Capital started by Aatif Awan, former VP of Growth at LinkedIn, which led to early investments in Airlift. The round was co-financed by Alter Global – a Silicon Valley-based emerging markets fund (making this their first investment in Pakistan) and other strategic angel investors.

The amount raised is unusually high, particularly by Pakistani standards. And it became the largest ever pre-seed raised by a Pakistan-based startup. Ushering in a new era of growth for startups in the country. Bazaar co-founder Saad Jangda also said that, the team they built around the idea and the market size helped them get the backing of investors. And eventually, score a significant round all over.

While their far-fetched goal is to use technology to solve this industry-wide problem faced by millions of retailers in Pakistan, Saad and Hamza’s ultimate vision is to materially contribute to Pakistan’s tech ecosystem.

On one occasion Saad said, “So much of Pakistan’s best talent has helped build great products and companies globally. We want to assemble and nurture the best talent to build something incredible in and for Pakistan. We know that with the right team, our underlying purpose, our self-belief, and a lot of hard work, we can build a company that can create a massive impact for our ecosystem.”

As the Pakistani tech market for B2B business is now seeing a major boom, businesses like bazaar is making business easy for people [manufacturers, suppliers, and distributors] to have one BIG platform for all their problems!

Review – Forty Rules of Love

“You can study God through everything and everyone in the universe, because God is not confined in a mosque, synagogue or church. But if you are still in need of knowing exactly where his abode is, there is only one place to look for him: in the heart of a true lover.”

The Forty Rules of Love is a superb ensnarement of two accounts – one set in the contemporary occasions with Ella, a housewife as the main lead [protagonist]. Hers is an account of lost love and expectation, till she winds up changed in light of a book she should read as a piece of her new job’s commitments. The second part of the story is that of the book ‘Sweet Blasphemy’, set in the thirteenth century, which depicts the lives and connections of Shams of Tabriz and Rumi.

The Beginning

Ella Rubenstein, an unhappy forty-year old housewife with a cheating husband and three children; she couldn’t comprehend why she has such a life. Over the time she had all this grown on her and she made peace with what she had, giving up on love and hope. She continues to her daily life drowning herself into household chores to avoid further conflicts. Being a housewife, life takes a turn for her and she reviews a book as part of her new job’s obligation, as a literary reviewer. The book ‘Sweet Blasphemy’ binds her as its own [set in the thirteenth century, which depicts the lives and connections of Shams of Tabriz and Rumi] and then she sets a conversation with a series of heartfelt emails with none other than Aziz Zahara himself.

Shams and Rumi

The current track that unfurls through the correspondence among Ella and Aziz is moderate. The more earnest and broad piece of the book is the spreading out of the old story through twelve voices including the essential players, Shams and Rumi, yet additionally a large group of others including Rumi’s family and a cast of dissimilar yet intriguing characters like Suleiman the Drunk, Desert Rose the Harlot and Hasan the Beggar.

Shams of Tabriz, a meandering dervish and intensive Sufi, outlines the forty principles of love which he grants to individual Sufi devotees. By uprightness of his endowment of having dreams about future, he predicts his own death. He chooses to give his insight to somebody at standard with him, somebody as heartfelt and in adoration as he is.

Significance and Love of Sufism

He makes a trip right to Baghdad to discover Rumi, a priest with a flustered soul. On the course of his imparting knowledge, he faces hatred and disillusionment from others, particularly Rumi’s family. Notwithstanding all chances and risks, he shows the way of light and love to Rumi; accordingly ascribing to his getting quite possibly the most sought-after Sufi and artist of all times.

Through their unordinary and unlikely affiliation, regarded scholar Rumi forgets and relearns the methods of Sufism through Shams, who challenges description. Rumi’s better half, kids, and devotees are astounded at the love that Rumi showcases to Shams, discovering Rumi’s change totally impossible.

For every one of its anecdotes and philosophical leanings, the book isn’t preachy at any stage. Each short part pushes the story ahead in straightforward words in the exceptional voice of each character. The narrative streams easily, holding the reader in riveted consideration. It is difficult to get vested in what happens between Ella and Aziz because the story of Rumi and Shams is of far greater significance. Every minor character makes a major impression because each one of them is critical to complete the tale.

The word ‘Forty’ Being Special

“Forty is a most beautiful age for men and women. In mystical thought, forty symbolises the conquest from one level to a higher one and spiritual awakening,” says Aziz to Ella. And at one point through the end Aziz, through the words of Shams, makes Ella question — Am I ready to change the life I am living? Am I ready to change within?

The Greater Lesson

Much of what happens in life cannot be explained. Everybody, even great philosophers and mystics rationalises the world through their own lens and their beliefs, whether it is the fear that drives people or love, destiny plays a part in everything. To find the heart of the story in Shams, Ella, Aziz, you would find yourself turning pages and then your heart and your eyes will get stuck on Rumi’s words –

“Love cannot be explained. It can only be experienced. Love cannot be explained, yet it explains all.”
