Friday Flix Series of the Week: The Family Man

Friday Flix Series of the Week: The Family Man

We’ve returned with another review. Yes, I concur. Why not? I watch a lot of shows. This is the only enjoyable activity I have during the week. That, of course, means writing about it. So, here we go again with yet another show this time for “The Family Man.”

The Family Man

The Amazon Original’s cast of The Family Man includes Manoj Bajpayee, Priyamani, Sharib Hashmi, Gul Panag, Shreya Dhanwanthary in lead roles. The series is directed by Raj & DK.

The Family Man review

The Family Man succeeds in becoming a surprisingly funny espionage series, capable of quick one-liners as well as slick thrills, without ever overshadowing the genre. The Amazon drama is crafty, flexible, and savvy, like its street-smart protagonist Srikant. The series treads a fine tonal line, cleverly burying its high ideals beneath the middle-class sensibilities of its hero, Srikant, portrayed by Manoj Bajpayee, who gets the joke.

Also Read: Friday Flix Series of the Week: Panchayat

Srikant is an underpaid government employee, which is far from the whole truth. He has a wife Suchi (Priyamani) who he has regular middle class arguments. Sri has settled into his government work, much to his family’s dismay, despite their repeated suggestions that he find a more profitable vocation.

Sri is an agent in a top-secret intelligence organisation called TASC, a strange offshoot of RAW, but his family assumes he is rotting away as some paper-pusher behind a desk. Their mission is to perform widespread surveillance in order to detect patterns and avert terrorist acts. “Privacy is myth, much like democracy,” Sri’s closest friend says to a novice agent in the first episode, surrounded by enormous screens and cutting-edge technology.

The Family Man is surprisingly topical as a workplace comedy in situations like this, and as a domestic sitcom when Sri is at home. Sometimes he goes out of his way to spy on his kids for instance Sri uses high-tech surveillance software to hack into his daughter’s phone to see whether she has any boyfriends.

However, the situation becomes more serious when similar methods are used to eavesdrop on a group of Muslim college students suspected of inciting an insurrection.

Final verdict

While there are many outstanding scenes in the show, they stand out for their exquisite coordination and choreography. Overall, The Family Man checks all the elements that make it worth binge-watching. Yes, there are flaws, but it’s still a worthwhile movie!

Leaving No One Behind – NOWPDP’s initiative Working Together to Accelerate Action on Accessibility

KARACHI (June 1, 2022): NOWPDP hosted a panel called “Leaving No One Behind – Working Together to Accelerate Action on Accessibility” to discuss viable ways to curb inaccessibility so that persons with disabilities can move beyond this basic hindrance and flourish.

Persons with disabilities, corporate organizations, and media personnel attended this highly anticipated panel to voice their own lived experiences and solutions to this massive issue in Pakistan. The panel was made fully accessible with assistive devices and sign language interpreters.

Also attending and speaking on the panel were Sadiq Memon – Special Assistant to the CM on Disability Affairs, Sindh, Irfan Salam Mirwani – District Commissioner Malir, Farhat Rasheed – Director DALDA Foods and Westbury Group of Industries, and, Adnan Ahmad – Trainer and Specialist of Visual Studies at NOWPDP.

Panels such as these are significant in sparking and steering conversations towards making proper policies on a national and provincial level as well as inclusive programs on an organizational level to bolster persons with disabilities in becoming independent.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 15% of any country’s population comprises persons with disabilities, making that Pakistan around 31 million. For them, accessibility is imperative to experience the full range of human rights, and increase their participation across social, economic, and political life.

President NOWPDP, Amin Hashwani said, “Accessibility is a basic right for all persons with disabilities and we have been working for 14 years to bring about pragmatic ways through which we can ensure this happens; be it through the sensitization and infrastructural guidance to organizations or provision of assistive devices to persons with disabilities. We hope that more awareness comes out of such important panels.”

Sadiq Memon stated that Centers of Excellence that focus on economic empowerment and accessibility like NOWPDP’s Moriro Markaz are to be created in more districts soon. He said, “NOWPDP’s model of Moriro Markaz is an epitome of quality that should be used as a standard for Special Education in all over Sindh.”

Farhat Rasheed also shared her lived experiences and said, “There really need to be proper measures for accessibility and its implementation for all kinds of disabilities. There should actually be penalties for all public spaces and buildings that do not have accessible measures for functioning and movement.”

DC Irfan Salam said, “We really need to work on more public-private partnerships to ensure accessibility becomes a basic facet of functioning for everybody.”

NOWPDP pledges to continue working on accessibility for persons with disabilities through sparking vital conversations by these panels, advocacy, and consultancies/sensitizations of different organizations.

Because Inclusion starts with accessibility.

Bringing back the nostalgia with Bollywood's musical soul, KK!

Bringing back the nostalgia with Bollywood’s musical soul, KK!

The end of an ERA with KK

I talk about music a lot here, and I know what I’m talking about. As someone who has liked several styles of music for many years, there is still something incredibly new about vintage Bollywood music, and this is surely due to KK!

I immediately started playing a KK jukebox on YouTube after hearing of his tragic death, only to find myself singing along to the lyrics of songs that were over 5-10 years old. That reminded me that KK’s songs were all my favorite Bollywood tracks. And my feelings for them have grown much stronger.

Who is KK?

Born in Delhi to Malayali parents C. S. Menon and Kunnath Kanakavalli, Krishnakumar Kunnath popularly known as KK, was an Indian playback singer. He recorded songs in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Bengali, Assamese, and Gujarati languages.

Also Read: A tribute to Lata Mangeshkar, the nightingale of India!

KK magnificent career

KK began his career by singing for advertisement jingles and made his film debut with an A.R. Rahman soundtrack. In 1999, he launched his debut album titled Pal. The songs “Pal” and “Yaaron” from the album Pal became very popular and are commonly used in school farewells.

He sang about 3,500 jingles in 11 languages over the course of four years. Lewis was named KK’s mentor after giving him his first jingle in Mumbai. But fate had other plans for KK, who preferred to be heard rather than seen.

His popular songs included “Tadap Tadap” from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), the Tamil song “Apadi Podu”, “Dola Re Dola” from Devdas (2002), “Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai” from Woh Lamhe (2006), “Aankhon Mein Teri” from Om Shanti Om (2007), “Khuda Jane” from Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008), “Piya Aaye Na” from Aashiqui 2 (2013), “Mat Aazma Re” from Murder 3 (2013), “India Wale” from Happy New Year (2014) and “Tu Jo Mila” from Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), among others.

He has received six Filmfare Awards nominations and a Filmfare Awards South.

KK’s last concert and lack of management

Just hours before his death on May 31, the legendary 53-year-old vocalist sang at a concert in Nazrul Mancha, a venue of the Sir Gurudas Mahavidyalaya college in Kolkata. In this regard, just a few speculations have surfaced.

The air conditioning was not working at Nazrul Mancha the day before too. He has already expressed his dissatisfaction with the situation. It’s not an open auditorium, and the venue should at the very least keep an eye on its appliances if they’re charging so much. The artist was shown sweating considerably in a number of videos.

He was basically asking the administration to turn on the air conditioning and turn out some of the lights. He was expressing, “Pichwara jal raha hai.”

People knocked down the doors and walked inside the auditorium without a ticket. The hall had a capacity of 2200 people, and there were over 6000 people present. In the auditorium’s passageways, a few people are celebrating by blowing fire extinguishers. There was no one in charge of security. Imagine the heat of Kolkata, then a packed auditorium with no air conditioning, and you’re singing your heart out at the top of your lungs. The heart attack does not appear to be normal.

Celebrities’ condolences and tribute to KK

Celebrities came on Twitter and pour in their love and tribute for the late artist. Fellow singers also are in shock after his tragic demise.

Emraan Hashmi, whose on-screen sing-sync was created just for KK’s replay, was stunned. He tweets,

The script (Chandan Kumar), which wonderfully depicts the essence of rural life, and the performances by a brilliant cast are ultimately the trump cards here. The characters’ eccentricities provide an excellent counterpoint to each other while remaining realistic and, luckily, not one-dimensional.

Final Verdict

Abhishek Tripathi, played by Jitendra Kumar, is effortlessly convincing as a city guy attempting to make his way through rustic life. His facial gestures and eyes brilliantly reflect Abhishek’s range of emotions, from loneliness to boredom to frustration. As the ‘Pradhan Pati,’ Raghubir Yadav is a joy to see. Despite her limited screen time, Neena Gupta gives a strong performance, and Chandan Roy shines as Vikas, Abhishek’s assistant, with his one-liners.

Karan Johar steals ‘Nach Punjaban,’ claims Abrar-ul-Haq

Bollywood steals Pakistani music yet again!

Pakistani music from the 1990s was also a hit at the time. Why not, right? We’ve had some of the best singers and musicians around. We offer unsurpassed quality in any language. Bollywood, on the other hand, enjoys stealing our songs without our consent. Imagine a multi-billion-dollar industry with a scarcity of skilled, unique composers.

Karan Johar copies Nach Punjaban, Abrar-ul-Haq claims.

Abrar ul Haq, a Pakistani singer, has accused director Karan Johar and his production company Dharma Productions of copying his music. In a tweet, Abrar claimed that Karan stole his song “Nach Punjaban” for his forthcoming film Jugjugg Jeeyo. The song Nach Punjaban was featured in the recently released trailer for Jugjugg Jeeyo.

Abrar’s tweet reads, “I have not sold my song ‘Nach Punjaban’ to any Indian movie and reserve the rights to go to court to claim damages. Producers like @karanjohar should not use copy songs. This is my 6th song being copied which will not be allowed at all. @DharmaMovies @karanjohar.” In another one he wrote, “Song ‘Nach Punjaban’ has not been licensed to any one. If someone is claiming it, then produce the agreement. I will be taking legal action #NachPunjaban.”

Twitter is angry!

Several irate comments were written on Dharma Productions’ trailer premiere video, which featured the cast dancing to the song. “You could provide them notice enough is enough,” one person suggested. They believe that Pakistan is a bad country, but they plagiarise our music, films, and even sequences from our dramas. Why are you copying us if Pakistan is so bad? @DharmaMovies @karanjohar “Why would you copy?” questioned another.

Abrar-ul-Haq added another tweet mentioning that he has not given rights to the song to anyone. That makes the song his individual property. Moreover, he will be taking legal action against the Producer.

Here is the copied version for the Bollywood movie, “Jug Jug Jeeyo,”

Friday Flix Series of the Week: Made In Heaven

Friday Flix Series of the Week: Made In Heaven

My passion for Indian web series is well-known, and most people understand why. It boasts a strong story line, as well as over-the-top direction and cinematography. I recently had the opportunity to watch Made in Heaven, and I was blown away by not only the acting but also the story line.

Made in Heaven cast

The cast includes, Jim Sarbh, Sobhita Dhulipala, Arjun Kapoor, Kalki Koechlin Shashank Arora, Shivangi Raghuvansa and Natasha Singh in lead. The additional cast includes Vinay Pathak, Zachary Coffin, Dilip Tahil, Ayesha Raza Mishra, and others.

Also Read: Friday Flix Series of the Week: Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein

Made in Heaven story line

The most rational thing to do when two people sincerely love each other is to marry and be forever linked as one. Of course, things aren’t always that simple in the real world, and as Made in Heaven demonstrates. Life can be downright chaotic and confusing at times.

Amazon Prime’s latest Indian drama is a humbling, but slightly exaggerated look at marriage from the eyes of two wedding planners. Karan and Tara, who are dealing with their own personal troubles along.

Also Read: Friday Flix Series of the Week: The Fame Game

Every wedding is a chaos!

The weddings they plan are always dripping with tension, ready to explode at the first sign of family meddling. There’s always something that has to be corrected that goes outside the scope of a wedding planner’s responsibilities. But as we learned in episode one, their firm desperately needs money, and Karan is in serious financial trouble. It’s not just about weddings in Made in Heaven.

Sexuality, guilt, bullying, and adultery are all heavily reflected in the series. How the wealthy and snobbish cheat and assume they can get away with it. And how guilt jeopardises relationships built on adultery!

The brilliance of cinematography

Throughout Made In Heaven, tracking shots are used extensively. Cameras pan horizontally over the terrain on several occasions, adding depth to establishing views, while the numerous memories have the customary array of echoing voices and dreamy, vivid colours for impact. They’re minor details, but they contribute to the series’ authenticity and uniqueness.

Final Verdict

Despite the complex drama woven throughout each episode, Made In Heaven has a raw and honest quality to it that makes it worth watching.

Also Read: Indian Matchmaking season 2 promises Sima Taparia’s return and more drama

Furthermore, what makes this show so contagious and keeps you going back for more is seeing two families from different walks of life come together in the face of love.

Moreover, while some may bemoan the over-the-top tone as the show occasionally borders on melodrama, Made In Heaven is a well-produced, competently acted drama that showcases the best of Indian culture and weddings.

Doctor Strange vs Lollywood: What is the future of Pakistani Films?

Doctor Strange vs Lollywood: What is the future of Pakistani Films?

Marvel vs. Lollywood 2022

Since the premiere of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in Pakistan, directors whose films were released just days before the Marvel picture have been on a mission to rectify the situation or avoid future disputes. “Had it not been for the doctor,” the Eid releases, which returned after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 outbreak, are apparently not performing as well as they would have.

Many of us are thinking about the most obvious reasons, and why not? Pakistani movie content is not up to the mark! Many of us will agree with this.

The mad producers or multiverse madness

Adnan Siddiqui, Wajahat Rauf, and Yasir Nawaz, the producers of Dum Mastam and Parde Mein Rehne Do, sat down for an emergency news conference on Saturday to discuss the situation. They encouraged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to investigate the problem, and some used social media to spread the word. Several people are now advocating for Multiverse of Madness, slamming filmmakers for forcing them to use local productions rather than having a choice. Many are also attempting to convey to filmmakers why a film’s success is determined by its content rather than its competitors.

A series of Tweets

Meanwhile, as Doctor Strange vs Lollywood goes on, Siddiqui tweeted on Monday, “Releasing Dr. Strange could have waited for a few days. The last thing we need when the industry is finally opening up after two years is some foreign film hijacking our screens and relegating us to a corner. Homegrown cinema has more right any day.”

Similarly, Amar Khan the star of Dam Mastam shared her perspective on the matter she posts, Pakistan wants its audience more than ever before. The industry needs to act “1 Unit.”

A user responded with the very valid argument that it is the content that matters. The Netflix and Amazon Prime Era is here. Moreover, the amount of drama in Pakistani films is absolutely unacceptable. Sadly, if they keep pushing this practice, no one will come to see the movies. He further mentioned that the cinemas were packed because Jawani Phir Nahi Aani (both parts) is movie material.

Also Read: Parde Mein Rehne Do aims to give a colorful vibe with a prominent message

He also tweets,

Whereas, Zahid Ahmed the star of Ghabrana Nahi Hai posts that “let’s not let doctors deter us, focus on improving or quality.” “Ghabrana Nahi Hai” is currently leading the box office. The movie also features Saba Qamar as a lead.

Also Read: Trailer of Ghabrana Nahi Hai starring Saba Qamar and Zahid Ahmed is out!

A sad reality: Doctor Strange vs Lollywood

In the end, this is an excellent opportunity to consider the philosophy of effective filmmaking. Producers and storytellers should develop a content strategy that includes good storylines. Last but not the least, any film in the competition should and maybe released; if the substance is strong, the public will be drawn in!

Thursday Tunes: Creating a legacy with Coke Studio season 14!

Thursday Tunes: Creating a legacy with Coke Studio season 14!

Music connecting people through and through

Rohail Hyatt founded Coke Studio in 2008. For anyone with CS, Rohail Hyatt is a well-known name; he was a key member of the boyband ‘Vital Signs’ from 1986 until 1998, alongside Junaid Jamshed. It was a novel concept for the people, as live-recorded music sessions with synchronized arrangements and live singing were not very popular in Pakistan, let alone being backed by a beverage company. However, something struck a chord with the audience.

Coke Studio season 1 to 12

From season 1 to season 6, Rohail Hyatt was the sole producer at Coke Studio, and after that, Strings the band, featuring Faisal Kapadia and Bilal Maqsood, co-produced three seasons with Rohail.

Then, for the first time, from Season 9 to Season 13, multiple producers were involved in the seasons, including Strings and Rohail Hyatt as executive producers. Shani Arshad, Faakhir, Shuja Haider, Ali Hamza, Shiraz Uppal, Jaffer Zaidi Zohaib Kazi, and Xulfi are among the Pakistani musicians on the list.

The distinctive new wave in Coke Studio Season 14

As a long-time fan of Nescafe Basement, I’ve always longed for Zulfiqar Jabbar Khan to produce Coke Studio because he’s known for introducing new, young voices to the show. NB was regarded as a maestro after performing several cover songs by new performers. He was then given the opportunity to produce Coke Studio 14. And then there’s this musical marvel!

Also Read: ‘Ye Dunya’ Coke Studio 14 shares a metal-rap infused message

Everything about this season was unique, from the opening track “Tu Jhoom” to the closing track “Phir Milenge,” which discusses the visually appealing set designs as well as the art direction. Season 14 has a more youthful feel to it.

This makes me question why this year? It’s because those with a different perspective were given the opportunity to pursue and present their own creative potential. Experimentation is necessary for music. This season was distinguished by its vibrant colors and music video-style sets.

Also Read: Thursday Tunes: Kana Yaari by Eva B, Abdul Wahab Bugti and Kaifi Khalil is the vibe anthem of this year!

Finally, some new artists!

When I saw the lineup of musicians, it was like a dream come true. Let’s talk about the artists for a moment. Young Stunners, Faris Shafi, Abdullah Siddiqui, Arooj Aftab, Justin Bibis, Zain Zohaib, and Butt Brothers. Kaifi Khalil, Eva B, Hasan Raheem, Shae Gill, Talal Qureshi, and I’m talking about peak brilliance! They were all new to the platform, and believe me when I say that this might have been disastrous. It was, however, the polar opposite. It was wholesome!

Also Read: Ali Sethi and Shae Gill channels a bohemian vibe in Coke Studio’s new song ‘Pasoori’
Seeing Atif Aslam in a new light and with a fresh perspective was a welcome addition. Ali Sethi elevated the song with his unapologetic attitude and beautiful singing. Momina Mustehsan’s singing style needs to be explored more. Despite this, each artist was able to add weight to it.

Pristine music production

A separate feature article dedicated to the production, composition, and arrangement is required. Sherry Khattak, Action Zain, Arooj Aftab, and Talal Qureshi were among the incredible music production team that worked alongside Xulfi and Abdullah Siddiqui. Furthermore, to add fun and creative originality to the tunes, many artists penned their own lyrics. The whole season was flawlessly accomplished by Xulfi and Abdullah Siddiqui, as well as Action Zain.

Except for ‘Mehram,’ which had many of us in tears, every song was well created with an enthusiastic upbeat feel!

Coke Studio season 14 most viewed songs in order

And you’re probably wondering which song has the most views. Yes, it’s Ali Sethi and Shae Gill’s “Pasoori.” Coke Studio discovered Shae Gill, who turned out to be a hidden gem. Moreover, the song is a lovely addition to Coke Studio and has a staggering 48 million views on YouTube! In addition to that ‘Tu Jhoom’ and ‘Kana Yaari’ (the first Balochi language hit song in CS) were next on the list, with 29m and 14m, respectively.

Find the rest according to the views here:

With great power comes great responsibility!

This year’s exceptional Coke Studio season 14 has not only produced amazing music but has also pushed the boundaries of creativity to new heights. And now, because the standard is impossible to achieve due to its uniqueness, the following season is predicted to be on par with or better than this one.

Whatever the future holds, we’re looking for new and creative music!

Book Review: Without Merit by Colleen Hoover

Book Review: Without Merit by Colleen Hoover

Without Merit by Colleen Hoover

Merit Voss lives in a one-of-a-kind situation: Dollar Voss, a refurbished church, is home to her blended family. Merit’s father had an affair with her mother’s old nurse, with whom he now has a child, and the family’s once cancer-stricken mother now lives in the basement. Merit’s twin sister is only interested in terminally ill lovers, her elder brother ignores her, and her younger half-brother absorbs all of the chaos and toxicity in the family.

Merit’s depression

Merit is a feisty, quick-witted adolescent who observes her family from the outside while keeping all of their secrets hidden. She is depressed about her life, acting as if she isn’t a member of her own family, and believing that no one would notice if she didn’t exist. Merit progressively stops coming to school, begins sleeping throughout the day, and becomes increasingly enraged by her family’s circumstances. The only bright spot in her life at the moment is an intriguing boy named Sagan, who is off-limits because he is dating Merit’s twin. Merit suffers yet another setback.

To layers and depth of depression and secrets

It is not a regular tale with depth and complexities, it’s more. Even though Merit isn’t aware of it, the reader gradually learns that she is depressed. Merit’s family and friends gradually start nudging her and hinting she might be depressed, but she refuses to acknowledge she is the one who needs therapy.

A lesson about compassion

Merit tries to resolves to take matters into her own hands, and things swiftly spiral downward.

However, her family does not wish to live in a world without merit, and this tale is full of humor and optimism for our protagonist. It’s the narrative of a depressed adolescent, and author Colleen Hoover emphasizes the value of family, communication, and self-love.

Merit’s misery and sadness are palpable and authentic to the reader, and my heart ached for her as she embarked on a path of self-discovery and self-love. Sometimes sadness sneaks upon us; we don’t recognize we’re depressed until it’s too late, regardless of what others observe, and Merit is no exception. In the novel, her romantic suitor also helps her heal, and he, like us, falls for our unexpected hero.

Final Verdict

I adored the delightfully flawed characters and the way Without Merit unfolded. I recommend this book to everyone who enjoys an honest story about a girl growing up in a troubled household and dealing with depression, as well as readers who enjoy a happy ending.

About the Author

Colleen Hoover is the best-selling author of eleven books and five novellas on the New York Times bestseller list. Hoover’s books are classified as New Adult and Young Adult fiction.
