Friday Flix Movie of the Week: Mr. Harrigan’s Phone

Mr. Harrigan’s Phone

The John Lee Hancock film, which is based on a Stephen King short tale, centres on a youngster who reportedly receives calls and texts from his enigmatic former employer, Mr. Harrigan, who recently passed away.

Mr. Harrigan’s Storyline

The reclusive billionaire, played by Donald Sutherland, pays Craig (Jaeden Martell), to visit his estate on the outskirts of their Maine town and read to him after school. Although not a fan of Harrigan, Craig’s father (Joe Tippett) respects his moral sense. One of the movie’s intriguing tensions is whether it will keep its true north.

The bitter-sweetness of digital technology

The friendship between Craig and Harrigan and the superb chemistry between the protagonists have a bittersweet quality. It’s like if Mr. Potter from “It’s a Wonderful Life” tracked down a charming neighbourhood boy who was unaware of the Bedford Falls history of his tutor. This story on the allure of digital technology is fundamentally about the analogue world, with its hard-bound literature and daily newspapers.

Also Read: Friday Flix Movie Review: Her

When Craig starts high school, he encounters bullying, develops friends, and discovers a hero. Craig’s science teacher, Ms. Hart, is played by actor Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and she serves as both a ray of sunshine and a voice of caution. The iPhone is also becoming a must-have status item at the same time. Craig purchases one for his old friend with an unexpected windfall.

Craig is shocked when Harrigan unexpectedly passes away. What transpires thereafter transforms the film from a scary one into an entertaining drama about technology with creepy-crawlies, coupled with some wonderfully suited ethical dilemmas for Craig—and for us.

The film has its highs and lows, but the constant plot never loses its focus or makes you want it to end. It did! It didn’t feel drawn out in the least, and Craig and the audience both got the correct resolution at the right time.

Joyland teaser offers a wave of goosebumps!

Joyland teaser is out!

The much-anticipated, Cannes-winning film Joyland has finally released its teaser. It teases the joy and tragedy that will unfold in the Saim Sadiq-directed film that has made waves around the world.

The teaser

The 45-second clip of the evidently multi-dimensional film presents an array of colours and diversity in a society painted in dull grey and oftentimes, shades of dreary red when represented in films globally. It shows the world a side of the country that is rarely seen, rarely discussed, and almost always villainized. The storyline depicts the narrative of the youngest son in a patriarchal family who is expected to have a boy with his bride. And it is a tale of the sexual revolution. Instead, he joins an exotic dancing company and develops feelings for the trans woman who runs it.

A man in love, a woman in the wilderness, a family partying in a large, fragile bubble that is likely to break, and a transwoman covered in blood are all depicted in the teaser. The teaser then gives viewers a preview of the performance that is about to start as they wait to be mesmerised by dance, misery, and dreams that vanish in a puff of glitter and smoke.

When Joyland is releasing?

On November 18, Joyland is scheduled for release in Pakistani theatres. It originally gained attention when it won the Cannes LGBTQ Palm prize for best LGBT, queer, or feminist-themed film. It contains a daring portrait of a transgender dancer in a Muslim country.

“Don’t confuse your passion with profession” Irfan Junejo says goodbye to his dream career

Irfan Junejo says goodbye to his dream career!

Irfan Junejo is a name that everyone has heard of. He is one of Pakistan’s most popular and valuable YouTubers, spreading positivism and rational perspectives to his fans and followers. But he has some disappointing news for his followers. On October 8th, he posted a video to YouTube with the caption, “Dream Career Ko Bye Bye Kardia.”

The dream abandonment!

Irfan says in the video that he has been busy with other work and has been absent from YouTube. He began by explaining how his journey began on YouTube in 2017, and how he has a penchant for making videos, which began to generate revenue for him and became his profession. “Technically,” he knew, but he also knew that this would not be a profession for long.

He revealed that while making videos, he made subtle hints that he wanted to be a director. He aspired to be a good commercial director ever since he played football and saw Nike and Adidas commercials. He also stated that he always ensured that his production quality and work were flawless.

Zero creative freedom

He bemoaned the fact that “Following that, I was given various directing opportunities, and when I completed them, I realised that commercial directors have little to zero creative freedom in most cases. And anyone who knows me knows that I will not give up my creative freedom.”

Furthermore, he said, “I thought I was new in the industry this is why it was happening and I was not getting the creative freedom, but that was not the case.”

“I romanticised my dream with my passion with this directing career, and that was simply not the reality I was expecting working with larger budgets, equipment, and teams,” Junejo concluded. “I have seen commercial creation with a budget of millions,” he continues, “but brand managers and brand existence are more prominent than the director himself.”

Finally he said that, “YouTube saari zindagi ke liye profession tou reh nahe sakta, aaj relevant hai kal nahe houngay, kal lougon ko kisi aur ko dekhna houga, kisi young jawan chehre ko dekhna houga.” He also stated that what began as a hobby for him has now become his profession. Friday Flix Series of the Week: Jamtara Sabka Number Ayega

Jamtara: Sab Ka Time Ayega

At a time when the relationship between politics, the police, and the press is being closely scrutinised, Netflix’s latest Indian original series, Jamtara, makes a confident attempt to expose it for what it is. It’s something we’ve always known: few crimes, big or small, can ever be committed without the law being aware of or prepared for them, and news isn’t just about what happened but also about what the consumer wants it to be. This, however, is just one of the many narrative threads woven throughout the 10-episode show’s intricately designed plot.

While billed as a true-crime story, presumably to capitalise on the genre’s global popularity, in which Netflix has played a significant role, Jamtara is really a small-town family drama that combines familiar tropes with a fresh-faced energy; a show that feels sprawling yet rather simplistic.

Jamtara: Sab Ka Time Ayega storyline

Despite a distressingly cynical premise that suggests greed can corrupt anyone, Jamtara is, in its heart of hearts, rather optimistic about humanity. It sends a subtle, yet powerful message by pitting its criminal protagonists against a morally unimpeachable police officer, and by making her a woman in this very masculine world.

The rest of the time, the show resembles what Anurag Kashyap offers: a rustic crime drama, lyrically written, about power and ambition; a shaming of the deluded Indian male.

The bunch of school-drop-outs with an aim

The boys in the centre of Jamtara are all ‘chauthi fail,’ a slur aimed at dropouts who’d rather spend their days harassing women on the streets than staying in school, despite the fact that they’re their mothers’ favourite human beings. Their lack of education, however, pales in comparison to their immaturity. They may have lived very different lives from ours, but they are also millennials.

Also Read: Friday Flix Series of the Week: Darlings

The contrasting realities

Jamtara suggests that the more cunning ones use technology to retaliate against an invisible adversary. This takes the form of a virtual status struggle in the show. Because these boys have never had anything, their first encounter with power ends with them venting their rage on imagined masters – the urban elite, the rich, and the privileged; representatives of the forces that have always kept boys like Sunny and Rocky in their grip. The show humanises criminals while never glorifying their actions.

The aesthetic brilliance

This is due in part to the lush visual style of director Soumendra Padhi. His use of digital cameras and anamorphic lenses reminded me of the great Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan, who tells tough rural stories with an undeniably slick aesthetic. This proximity of the flawless images produced by digital cameras and the unpolished environment that they photograph has thematic significance as well.

Last verdict

However, despite strong central performances across the board, the writing is frequently far too simplistic in comparison. The show appeared to be oddly constrained in the six episodes provided for preview. It remains to be seen whether this is due to a limited budget or a lack of imagination.

Well, watch it yourself and decide, you can find the series on Netflix.

Angelina Jolie accuses Brad Pitt of abuse on private plane

Angelina Jolie files abuse allegations against Brad Pitt

Angelina Jolie filed a cross-complaint against her ex-husband Brad Pitt on Tuesday, revealing new details about what she described in court papers as abusive behaviour by him on a private plane in 2016, which led to their divorce.

Also Read: Adam Levine accused of cheating by Instagram model Sumner Stroh

Lawyers for Ms. Jolie stated in a court filing in Los Angeles as part of a legal battle over a winery the prominent Hollywood actors once owned together that negotiations to sell her share of the business to Mr. Pitt had broken down over his demand that she sign a confidentiality agreement, which states “a nondisclosure agreement that would have contractually prohibited her from speaking outside of court about Pitt’s physical and emotional abuse of her and their children.”

What happened in the private plane between “Brangelina?”

Her filing goes on to describe an extended physical and verbal outburst in September 2016 during a flight from France to California for Mr. Pitt, Ms. Jolie, and their six children. “Pitt choked one of the children and struck another in the face” and “grabbed Jolie by the head and shook her,” the filing states, adding that at one point “he poured beer on Jolie; at another, he poured beer and red wine on the children.”

The incident was investigated by federal authorities, who have jurisdiction over flights, but no criminal charges were filed. Ms. Jolie filed for divorce just days after the plane trip.

Anne Kiley, Mr. Pitt’s lawyer, stated that Mr. Pitt had accepted responsibility for some things in the past but would not accept responsibility for things he did not do. (Unnamed people close to Mr. Pitt were quoted in various publications in 2016 as saying that he had not been abusive to his children.)

The French Winery battle

Ms. Jolie and Mr. Pitt’s divorce has dragged on for years, exacerbated by a custody battle for their children and, more recently, a lawsuit filed by Mr. Pitt over the French winery Château Miraval, which the couple purchased more than a decade ago. Mr. Pitt’s lawsuit, filed this year, accused his ex-wife of violating his “contractual rights” when she sold her half of the company to a Stoli Group subsidiary without his permission.

It is unclear whether allegations that Mr. Pitt choked or struck any of the children were included in the heavily redacted F.B.I. report. Ms. Jolie and Mr. Pitt have six children, who are now aged 14 to 21.

Mr. Pitt and Ms. Jolie met on the set of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” a 2005 action film in which they played married assassins. They bought a controlling interest in Château Miraval in 2008, seeing it as both a family home and a business; the couple married on the property several years later.

Friday Flix Series of the Week: Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story

Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story

The title of Netflix’s latest true-crime blockbuster hit, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, uses the murderer’s last name twice. Some people wish the Milwaukee murderer wasn’t getting so much attention. Dahmer (the show) was the most popular on Netflix as of Tuesday, but it’s not without controversy. Let’s dissect it. (But not in Dahmer’s way).

Jeffrey Dahmer

The real story of Jeffrey Dahmer

Of course, Jeffrey Dahmer was real, but what he did was so horrific that it seems impossible. Born in Milwaukee in 1960, he had a troubled childhood that included an early fascination with dead animals and dissection. He then murdered and dismembered 17 men and boys over the course of 13 years, beginning in 1978, committing necrophilia and cannibalism and preserving body parts and bones. He was apprehended in 1991 and sentenced to 17 years in prison.

Also Read: Friday Flix Series of the Week: The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann

The series

The ten-part series jumps from Dahmer’s unhappy childhood to his murders and eventual arrest. Aside from the horror of Dahmer’s crimes, the series shows how Milwaukee police ignored neighbors who warned them that something was wrong in the killer’s apartment. Two officers actually returned one of Dahmer’s victims to him after the boy tried to flee the house of horrors, badly injured and drugged.

The disturbing elements

The show is disturbing, gory, and depressing to watch. After a week on Netflix, it has received mixed and disturbing reviews. Dahmer is undeniably idolised in the country. His apartment’s squalor has lingered, right down to the blood stains on the mattress. We see him gut his first fish, peeling it apart in a disturbingly “gynaecological” manner so he can examine its organs. We see him naked and drenched in sweat. We’ve seen him in uncomfortable situations at several times. There is a scene in which Dahmer puts a shop mannequin to bed and fondles it while the song Please Don’t Go by KC and the Sunshine Band plays in the background.

The episode “Silenced”

The entire series was disturbing to me, but the saddest one was “Silenced.” It was a real sob-fest. It focuses on Tony Hughes, one of the men killed by Dahmer. Tony was deaf, and by centering the narrative on a Black, deaf, and gay and not only Dahmer killed him, but ate his flesh as well. The series also gave a narrative of giving voice to a community whose voice has too frequently been excluded from gawking serial killer portraits and this is because of Glenda’s multiple efforts and a man who was able to escape Dahmer’s apartment.

Tony Hughes

Glenda Cleveland

Niecy Nash plays Glenda Cleveland, Dahmer’s apartment neighbour who does everything she can to get the Milwaukee police to notice the horrifying smells and sounds emanating from behind his door.

Glenda Cleveland

In 1994, another inmate Christopher Scarver punched Dahmer to death in prison.

To not romanticize a serial killer

Imagine a serial killer having a fanbase! This is absurd. But yes, Dahmer was highly romanticized with a fanbase and that was equally disturbing as the series.

Evan Peters, a phenomenal actor!

Even though the series was disturbing and eerie, Evan Peters managed to stay afloat with his distinctive aura and creepy voice. His portrayal of Dahmer was on-point and commendable as a serial killer. The wave of anger, frustration, the freaky smile and dialogue delivery. Everything was spot on.

Is Jeffrey Dahmer available on Netflix?

All 10 episodes of Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, are now available for streaming on Netflix.

Friday Flix Movie of the Week: Good Luck Jerry

Good Luck Jerry

Jerry, a simple and shy girl from a lower middle-class family in Punjab, becomes a cocaine peddler to help pay for her mother’s cancer treatment. When she wants to quit but her family is unintentionally drawn into the business, things go awry. Jerry is forced to outwit the cops and thugs in order to survive.

Good Luck Jerry Cast

The cast includes Janhvi Kapoor, Jaswant Singh Dalal, Deepak Dobriyal, Sushant Singh, Mita Vashist,  Mohan Kamboj, Samta Sudiksha and in lead.

Also Read: Load Wedding vs Raksha Bandhan: Nabeel Qureshi reacts to Bollywood ‘copying’ his films

Storyline

Kolamaavu Kolika, the official remake of the Tamil film, is set in Punjab. Jaya Kumari aka Jerry (Janhvi Kapoor) lives with her mother, Sarbati (Mita Vashisht), and younger sister, Cherry. Jerry, who does not come from a wealthy family, is forced to raise Rs 25 lakhs for her mother’s treatment after she is diagnosed with second-stage lung cancer.

In an unusual turn of events, she ends up retrieving a packet of cocaine for a local drug dealer Timmy. When she asks for work, the mobster is taken aback, falls in love with her, and hires her as a hustler.

Risky, but funny

It’s an obviously risky decision. Jerry wants out, but the price of her freedom is 100 kilogrammes of cocaine. She is innocent but not naive. Moreover, she understands that she must outwit the gang in order to stay and keep her family alive. If she succeeds, she will have to flee the police.

Also Read: Friday Flix Movie of the Week: Laal Singh Chaddha

Every kooky character is hilarious, including Timmy’s trigger-happy sidekick, Jigar (Sahil Mehta), a conceited and loud Rinku (Deepak Dobriyal), who’s in love with Jerry, an outlandish cocaine distributor, Malik (Saurabh Sachdeva), the druglord, Daler (Sushant Singh), Sarbati, and her neighbour, Anil (Neeraj Sood). All of the actors impress with their acting abilities. Janhvi is excellent as a walking paradox. She chooses to be a masseuse against her family’s wishes, but she understands when and how a girl is supposed to speak, remain silent, or laugh. She trembles when there is bloodshed, but she will kill someone if she feels threatened.

When Jerry’s family is lured into the business, director Siddharth Sengupta keeps the narrative taut and the situation more intriguing. However, near the end, the film becomes monotonous and convoluted with scenes that do not advance the plot. Furthermore, the longish sequence in which Jerry is mistaken for being assaulted was jarring and appeared forced to heighten the hilarity.

Visual aesthetics

The visual appeal of the film is distinct — grubby yet slick — and captures the narrow alleyways and local markets as realistically as the landscapes. The soundtrack by Parag Chhabra has been used effectively, from the dance number Mor Mor to Jogan. Moreover, from Paracetamol to the dehati-quirky Jhand Ba.

Watch the trailer below,

Final Verdict

Good Luck Jerry is a hilarious and entertaining comedy that could have been even better if it had been a little shorter.
