‘Swinery’ is an anonymous Instagram account that posts brief videos of animated characters, including a critical auntie who dislikes Shazia’s daughter.
Meesha Shafi’s response to consumerism and wealth
The singer originally stated that she wrote and created the song herself. Furthermore, it is produced by the talented Abdullah Siddiqui. According to Meesha, the song was written as a sarcastic response to Pakistanis’ preoccupation with consumerism and wealth.

Finding your own self with music
She writes, “The idea of writing this song came out of a period of reflection on the rat race we often find ourselves in, where much of the focus is on what people own instead of who they are.”
Moreover, she says that ultimately, the song pokes fun at the collective identity crisis, which is only worsened by the colonial hangover as many of us have begun to realize.

Last but not least, she concludes, “Even within the race, we’ve come to attach a higher value to aspects of pop culture that have no roots in Pakistan or the wider South Asian community. So whether it was cultural references in the lyrics or the visual translation of the track into a music video, I aspired to create something uniquely us — desi and proud.”
